The head of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Mohamed El-Amine, said that the ATMIS mission is facing serious financial problems that threaten the future of this mission.
In a written statement he shared with Al Jazeera, he revealed that ATMIS is struggling with severe budget constraints and is even considering ending the mission due to lack of sufficient funding.
He noted that now the mission is struggling to pay compensation for the problems caused by ATMIS peacekeeping forces.
Last year, he said ATMIS needed at least $2 million in donor support to cover compensation claims.
These claims, which amount to 80 cases involving the peacekeepers, include incidents of death and injury, which further intensify the tensions between the international forces and the local communities.
Among these situations is the 2021 massacre in the Golweyn area of the Lower Shabelle region, where many farmers were massacred, leading to widespread concern about the lack of accountability of peacekeepers in conflict-ridden areas.
